Cassper Nyovest said he almost inked a deal with Sony but changed his mind when they wanted him to change his name.
He recently shared about that time in his life on an episode of Secure the Bag on YouTube.
Cassper partnered with Liberty and together they hold workshops that aim to prepare individuals in the arts, sports and entertainment Industry for financial fitness. All the sessions are packaged in five episodes on YouTube.
The rapper, songwriter, entrepreneur, record producer and amateur boxer said he came from Maftown (Mahikeng) wanting to own his music.
“It got so hard I also wanted to give up, I wanted to sign with Sony at that point and they wanted to give me R300,000 as an advance. I was so broke that I almost took the deal but there were two things we couldn’t agree to.
“One of them being that they wanted to own my masters, second, they wanted to change my name. So they wanted me to drop Nyovest because they said it sounded like a swear word. They just wanted to call me Cassper. I was like no, that is not going to work,” Cassper said.
At HHP’s memorial service in 2018 Cassper said HHP believed he could one day be as big as Lil Wayne.
“My biggest dream at that point was to be signed to Jabba and he would always tell me at that point that I’m not an artist who should be signed, I could be a businessman. He would say I could be as big as Lil Wayne and I would be like, ‘This guy is so crazy. I’m hungry and I just want to release this album.”
