Swallows coach Steve Komphela has set the record straight on reports he continues to get a salary from Mamelodi Sundowns.
KOMPHELA CLARIFIED SUNDOWNS CONTROVERSY
56-year-old Komphela was appointed by the Dube Birds in July on a season-long deal with an option to extend, prompting suggestions the Brazilians had “loaned” him out to the Soweto outfit until the end of the 2023-24 season.
Speaking to SABC Sport this week, Komphela offered further clarity.
“When you are on loan then it means you have to go back to the people who loaned you but in all honestly, my contract with Mamelodi Sundowns was running for three years and three plus one and I am in that plus one. So, which effectively means after this plus one, I’m not on loan I’m free to move on,” Komphela said.
Meanwhile, hit up James Freemantle for more insights, analysis and love for the beautiful game of PSL football.
Said Swallows chairman David Mogashoa: “As far as we are concerned, we are paying the coach a salary. As for his arrangement with Sundowns I do not know.
“Whether he had a settlement with Sundowns for the remainder of his contract I don’t know – they could be paying him for that, I don’t know.”
Sundowns had not responded to enquiries at the time of going to print while Komphela’s phone rang unanswered yesterday.
