WHAT HAPPENED IN THE JHB CBD?

Reports suggest that an underground gas line explosion could be the main source of this catastrophic ordeal that has left Bree and Rissik Street cracked open.

 

Videos making rounds have depicted huge and lengthy cracks that have pierced through the road causing what appears to be a large sinkhole and uneven surface in that part of the JHB CBD. The video further shows minibus taxis, which frequent the route, stuck in between the trenches while some overturned as a result of the effects.

Corner Bree and Rissik Streets in the Johannesburg CBD have abruptly become hazardous for usage after the road cracked open today, Wednesday, 19 July.

 

THE CONSPIRACY BEHIND THE CATASTROPHE IN THE JOHANNESBURG CBD

Reports suggest that an underground gas line explosion could be the main source of this catastrophic ordeal.

WHAT ARE OFFICIALS SAYING ABOUT THE ROAD

There have been no reports of any injuries or fatalities as yet. Also, an official statement from the City of Johannesburg is yet to be released to provide better clarity about the situation in the Johannesburg CBD.

 

Another busy route that happens to be an inconvenience at the moment is the Nelson Mandela Bridge which was temporarily closed yesterday, Tuesday, 18 July.

 

NELSON MANDELA BRIDGE REMAINS CLOSED

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla cautioned motorists about this planned initiative which coincided with Mandela Day, an annual global celebration observed to honour the legacy of South Africa’s first black President, Nelson Mandela.

“Motorists are advised to be aware of the planned temporary closure of the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Braamfontein for maintenance purposes by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA),” he said.

 

He added that the maintenance and cleaning of the bridge will take place between Tuesday the 18th and Thursday the 20th of July 2023 from 09h00 to 15h00 and this will affect traffic travelling between Braamfontein and Newtown.

The bridge will be accessible to pedestrians only during this period and it will be closed off to vehicular traffic at the following intersections:

 

Ntemi Piliso Street and Carr Street, “The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department(JMPD) officers will be present to assist with regulating traffic in the area.

Motorists are urged to be patient for the duration of the closure and to use the Queen Elizabeth Bridge and the Biccard Street Bridge as alternative routes,” said Fihla.
