Chief Justice Raymond Zondo issued a warning that state capture could happen again in South Africa and the ANC majority in parliament is unlikely to prevent it from happening.
The Warning comes a year after Zondo submitted his final state capture report to the president Cyril Ramaphosa, that included recommendations on how to prevent future state capture and corruption.
However, the slow pace at congress has followed through on these recommendations raised concerns tackling corruption and state appropriate.
Currently media coverage has focused on allegations against Deputy President Paul Mashatile and his growing group of philanthropists. Mashatile and his advisors have been working hard to portray him as the next president of South Africa before Ramaphosa’s second term end in the year of 2027.
Even though, South Africans are beginning to question who Mashatile really is and who is behind him in this game of thrones. The media coverage raises concerns about the potential for corruption and and state captured in the future, especially given the slow pace of action on previous recommendations.
The media coverage of Mashatile’s alleged Presidential aspirations is also raising questions about the role of the mainstream white owned media in South Africa.
Some have accused the media of gunning for Mashatile and trying to discredit him, while others argues that the media is simply doing its job in holding power accountable.
Regardless of the motivations behind the media coverage, it’s not clear that allegations of corruption and state capture continues to be a major concern issue for the people of South Africa and that action needs to be taken to prevent it from happening again in the coming years.
